I know what you’re thinking: Exactly who is drinking mushrooms? Especially in tea. Tea is supposed to be more than pleasant tasting, at the very least. And mushrooms have a distinct flavor, which may have to grow on some folks. But mushrooms these days have become popular as beverages. There are now mushroom coffees, mushroom powders to add to protein shakes or coffees, and now they are being used as an important part of herbal tea blends.
First, what is mushroom tea and how is it made? Mushroom tea is an infusion of mushrooms in hot water. It is made by using edible or medicinal mushrooms, such as chaga, reishi, lion's mane, and cordyceps. It’s made by using fresh or dried mushrooms. If using fresh mushrooms, they should be cleaned and sliced before being added to hot water. Dried mushrooms can be used without being pre-soaked. The mushrooms should be steeped in hot water for 10-20 minutes, or until the desired strength is reached.
What are the health benefits of mushroom tea? Mushroom tea is said to have a variety of health benefits, including:
Immune-boosting: Chaga tea is known for its immune-boosting properties. It contains beta-glucans, which have been shown to stimulate the production of white blood cells.
Antioxidant: Mushroom tea is a good source of antioxidants, which can help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
Anti-inflammatory: Mushroom tea has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Stress-relieving: Mushroom tea is said to have stress-relieving properties. It contains compounds that can help promote relaxation and improve mood.
Cognitive-enhancing: Mushroom tea is said to have cognitive-enhancing properties. It contains compounds that can help improve memory, focus, and concentration.
What are the safety and side effects of mushroom tea: Mushroom tea is generally considered safe for most people. However, it is important to note that there is limited research on the long-term safety of mushroom tea. Some people may experience side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, or stomach upset. It is important to talk to your doctor before drinking mushroom tea if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any underlying health conditions.
Mushrooms can be purchased in powdered form from health food stores, and even stores such as TJ Maxx (where I purchased my powdered mushroom). If you are adventurous and like to try new things, try adding mushrooms to your next cup of tea. As always, this is not medical advice and you should always consult with your doctor before taking any new supplements or herbs.
